Winter is Coming… Is Your Home Ready?

Fall is in the air in Colorado and that means unpredictable winter weather is soon to be here.  In Colorado that means at any moment you and your home need to be prepared to deal with sinking temperatures, snow, and ice.  So before winter hits hard this year here are some tips to get your home winter ready.

Disconnect Your Hoses

Don’t wait until the temperatures start dipping to do this, in Colorado the temperatures could dip down to freezing at any time.  If you leave hoses attached to your outside spigots during freezing temperatures you run the risk of burst pipes. The water in the hose will freeze and expand back up into the spigot into your home’s plumbing causing internal plumbing issues that you don’t want to deal with no matter the season.

Home Pro Tip - Also, make sure to drain your hoses before storing them to prevent cracking during the cold winter months.

Seal it Up

There are three reasons to make sure your home is sealed tight for the winter.

  1. Keep cold air and moisture out.
  2. Keep warm air in.
  3. Keep critters out.

Check around exterior door frames and windows for drafts and seal up leaks with calk.

Also check under sinks and in cabinets for critter sized holes and fill those in with calk or steel wool.

Check Your Roof

Wind, hail, rain, and sun have been beating down on your roof all year long; don’t wait until the first snow storm to discover you have a leaky roof.  And if you are not comfortable getting up there yourself or want a professional opinion, a pro roofer will charge a reasonable fee to check it out for you.

Get a Furnace / Chimney Check Up

Before your heater goes on for the winter, have a professional HVAC company come out and inspect your furnace.  They check for leaks and the efficiency of your furnace.  Also this is the time of year when you need to replace your furnace filter as well.
If you have a fireplace get your chimney cleaned and inspected before lighting any fires.

So before the first Colorado snow falls, be sure your home is winter ready for when the storm hits.
